It is important to choose a treatment that has been scientifically proven to be effective and comfortable and used by qualified experts in the field. This is very important as there are many unproven and ineffective remedies for snoring.
Oral appliances are worn during sleep and work by preventing the tissues at the back of the throat and the base of the tongue from collapsing back into the airway. The appliances are custom made by dental technicians using thin yet high strength materials.
Based on the results of extensive studies customised oral appliances are now regarded by sleep physicians as the best available treatment for snoring.
According to the Australian Dental Association information sheet and based on extensive research studies..."95% of people will have an improvement in the level of their snoring when using an oral appliance."
A study at SleepWise Clinic*, involving 116 consecutive patients who have completed treatment, demonstrated that 111 were satisfied with the improvement in their snoring following the use of a customised, adjustable oral appliance. The majority of these patients had adapted well to their appliance and were feeling more refreshed on waking and less sleepy during the day.
Surgery is not a common treatment for snoring and sleep apnea. For snoring, surgery of the soft palate has been a treatment in the past. This involves trimming and tightening of soft tissues in the throat. Post-operatively it is usually associated with severe pain and studies show that it is only 30-50% effective in stopping snoring. The side–effects can include altered tone of voice and regurgitation of food. For these reasons surgery is now a seldom used treatment for snoring. It is not a preferred treatment for snoring by sleep physicians in Australia.
If you are overweight, weight reduction may improve your snoring. Weight gain deposits fat into and around the soft palate, tongue and neck structures consequently reducing the size of the airway. Weight loss can reduce these fat deposits and enlarge the airway size thereby reducing snoring. Weight loss alone is usually insufficient to overcome all the problematic snoring
Elevating the head of your bed and avoiding sleeping on your back may be helpful. Avoid drugs and habits that cause airway narrowing. Alcohol and most sleeping pills relax the muscles of the throat and can worsen snoring and sleep apnoea. You should avoid alcohol for at least three hours prior to bedtime. Smoking can also worsen snoring and sleep apnea, due to swelling of the nasal tissues.
Boil and bite devices
These devices are sold on the internet and are “one size fits all”. A recent study compared these devices to custom made dentist fiited, adjustable oral appliances. It demonstrated that the boil and bite devices are very difficult to use and are 60% less effective that custom made oral appliances in overcoming snoring.
There are other treatments offered on the internet and in stores which include nasal strips, sprays, pillows, rings and the buteyko breathing technique. These methods are unproven and generally regarded as ineffective, with some being the subject of ACCC investigations. These treatments are not recommended by sleep physicians.
